Dr. Len Balke

Medical Director

Dr. Balke received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from The University of Kansas. His medical training was completed at the Ohio State University, where he spent four years in a psychiatry residency. Dr. Balke is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry. He was a ‘Psychiatry in Practice’ award winner at the 7th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry in Berlin, Germany.

Dr. Balke has extensive experience working with those suffering from substance dependence and has been on staff and medical director for numerous treatment programs. He is certified to use Suboxone (buprenorphine) for the management of opioid dependence. In addition to his work with substance rehabilitation, he remains active as a general psychiatrist and previously served as Assistant Professor for the University of Virginia, where he educated medical students and physicians specializing in psychiatry.

His approach to patients is holistic and integrative and incorporates biological, psychological, and social aspects. Thus, he does not subscribe to a reductionistic approach in which a person is simply reduced to a combination of their brain and neurotransmitters. Dr. Balke customizes his treatment based on individual needs, which may include detoxification, relapse prevention, underlying psychiatric illness, and ingrained dysfunctional behavior patterns. While medications may be an integral part of treatment, individual/group psychotherapy and effective conflict resolution are also essential for continued recovery.
